FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Coolzy Right for You?
Tens of thousands of people around the world are sleeping better with Coolzy’s targeted refrigerated airflow. Here are some of the frequently asked questions that our customers ask before buying, and loving Coolzy.
Coolzy is a personal air conditioner that uses miniaturised refrigeration technology to cool air drawn in from the front of the unit by 10°C. A patented airflow system delivers this cool air in a gentle, focused horizontal stream directed toward the user’s face and upper body, rather than attempting to cool the entire room. The unit operates at 340 Watts, far less than conventional portable air conditioners.
Unlike traditional portable air conditioners, Coolzy is quiet, about the same noise level as a pedestal fan, ideal for a bedroom. The soothing fan noise will not disturb sleep. Waste heat from the cooling process is directed upward from the rear of the unit toward the ceiling, where it dissipates without being felt by the user.
Unlike a traditional air conditioner, Coolzy works fine with open doors and windows allowing healthy fresh air to circulate freely. It works outside too in sheltered places.
Coolzy is a genuine refrigeration air conditioner. It uses a compressor and refrigerant gas to produce cool air, exactly as a split system or conventional portable air conditioner does. It is not an evaporative cooler and requires no water or ice. In fact, Coolzy is a refrigerating fan. That’s why its cooling effect is much greater than a fan.
Unlike the older traditional air conditioners, Coolzy focuses its cooling output on nearby people rather than attempting to lower the temperature of an entire room. This is why it can operate at much lower power than conventional units and still keep people comfortable.
Yes, but much less. Because Coolzy is also cooling the air at the same time, the warming effect is only equivalent to the electrical power provided to the machine, about 340 Watts. That’s the same as three people conversing in a room together: that’s not enough to noticeably warm a room. The warm air from Coolzy rises to the ceiling, just like warm air from your kitchen refrigerator, oven or microwave.
We sell an optional exhaust nozzle (tubo mini) or 1.5 m exhaust pipe (tubo max) for people who feel they need one.

Any electrical appliance technician can repair these machines. You don’t need to find a specific aircon technician. We can send easy instructions and spare parts and many users have done repairs for themselves with simple home tools. Coolzy is very simple and easy to repair at home.
A traditional room air conditioner needs to dump a large amount of waste heat to the outside because it is cooling not only people, but also many tonnes of masonry. Coolzy still obeys the laws of physics and thermodynamics. Heat cannot disappear. However Coolzy generates 80-90% less waste heat because it is only generating a localized stream of cool air using 340 Watts electricity. A localized cooling device with the windows open works very differently compared with traditional room air conditioners operating with windows closed. So Coolzy can work fine with the windows open, something that contradicts the rules of traditional air conditioning. In most cases, Coolzy works fine without an exhaust pipe.
There are too many air conditioner scams advertising water coolers as “AC”. However, Coolzy is not a scam.

Coolzy is by far the most environmentally friendly air conditioning technology. With only 100g of natural high-efficiency r290 refrigerant and 340 Watts power consumption Coolzy generates 85% – 90% less greenhouse emissions than conventional air conditioners. The materials are fully recyclable too. Coolzy can easily run on solar-generated electricity, and does not require a large and costly battery to run on solar power through the night. So, Coolzy is a truly sustainable cooling technology, compared with older traditional air conditioners that are steadily warming cities and the global climate.
Coolzy is possibly the healthiest artificial cooling technology available. We recommend using Coolzy with open windows to allow natural fresh air to circulate and carry away pathogens and the carbon dioxide and methane emissions from people too. Furthermore, because Coolzy provides localized cooling, your body is still exposed to heat for part of the time so you regain your natural adaptation to warmer conditions. That means you feel more comfortable with less cooling. Medical research is starting to show that living in a constant temperature, fully air conditioned environment all the time leads to loss of cardiovascular health. Lastly, many of our users tell us that they experience less skin, throat and eye irritation with Coolzy than conventional air conditioners.
The air flowing from a conventional split air conditioner or traditional portable air conditioner is definitely uncomfortable. That’s because the cold air flow is intended to cool the entire room, so it has to be a lot colder than the room air. Prolonged exposure could definitely lead to a chill.
In contrast, the flow of cool air from Coolzy is slow, gentle and soothing. It’s just like a refreshing mountain breeze that lulls you to sleep on a hot summer night.
Conventional air conditioners must overcome the entire heat load of a room: walls, ceiling, floor, furniture, and the heat constantly entering through windows and gaps. This requires enormous amounts of power, typically 1,200 to 2,500 Watts or more. Coolzy takes a fundamentally different approach: it creates a cool microclimate immediately around the user, which requires only 340 Watts. Because it is not fighting to cool empty space, it can achieve the same comfort result at a fraction of the energy cost. Coolzy will run all night using only 3 electricity units, that’s around 1 – 2€.
Coolzy is far quieter than older traditional portable air conditioners. Coolzy provides cooling just where it is needed. Traditional portable air conditioners were designed as room coolers, so they need three to eight times more power and generate far more noise. Coolzy is smaller, lighter, and much easier to move from place to place. With the windows open for natural fresh air circulation, Coolzy needs no exhaust pipe.
The large exhaust pipe attached to a window is essential for traditional portable air conditioners because so much more heat has to be pumped out of the room. However, the exhaust pipe limits their room cooling capacity to just 3 – 4°C, no matter how powerful the machine or how small the room. Pumping hot air out of the room through the exhaust pipe reduces the air pressure in the room so warm air flows in through light fittings and other air gaps, mixing with the cool air from the machine.
The gentle cool air flow from Coolzy provides as much or more apparent cooling without all the disadvantages of the older traditional portables.
Yes. Unlike evaporative coolers, which become ineffective in high humidity because they rely on water evaporation to produce cooling, Coolzy uses refrigeration technology that works in all humidity conditions. In fact, Coolzy becomes more efficient in humid conditions: it extracts moisture from the incoming air as part of the cooling process, increasing its effective cooling output. This makes Coolzy well suited to the humid summer conditions experienced in parts of southern Europe, including coastal areas of France, Italy, Spain, and Greece.
Evaporative coolers work by passing air over wet pads or through misted water, which cools the air through evaporation. They are inexpensive to buy and run, but they have two significant limitations: they do not work in humid conditions, and they add moisture to the air, which can make humid environments feel worse. Coolzy uses refrigeration, the same technology as a split system, and works in all conditions, including high humidity. Coolzy also consumes more power than an evaporative cooler, but far less than any conventional portable or split air conditioner.
Widely advertised mini evaporative coolers provide little cooling. To match cooling effect that Coolzy provides, an evaporative cooler needs to use 2 litres of water every hour.
No. Conventional portable air conditioners require an exhaust hose to expel hot air through a window or wall opening, which creates an unsealed gap that draws hot outside air back into the room, significantly reducing their efficiency. Coolzy does not need an exhaust hose in most situations. The waste heat it produces is similar to the heat produced by three people sitting in the room, approximately 300 Watts, and is directed upward towards an open window or the ceiling where it dissipates. In a normally ventilated room with a door or window open, this heat is not noticeable. An optional exhaust hose accessory is available for very small, well-insulated rooms where even minor heat gain is undesirable.
Coolzy works best with a window or door open to allow natural fresh air circulation. That’s the healthier choice and reduces inflection risks. This is actually one of its advantages over split systems, which require sealed rooms to function efficiently. With open windows, fresh outdoor air circulates continuously through the room while Coolzy delivers cool air directly to the user. In a sealed room, the small amount of waste heat Coolzy can gradually raise the room temperature over several hours, which is why ventilation is recommended. Coolzy works with open doors and windows in a way that no split system can.
Coolzy was not designed to cool a room. Instead it cools people directly with a targeted cool air flow. It creates a cool microclimate of approximately 4 to 5 square metres, and is most effective when the user is within 1 to 2 metres of the front of the unit. For sleeping, this means placing Coolzy next to the bed so the cool airstream reaches the face and upper body throughout the night. Because Coolzy targets the person rather than the room, it works equally well in a small apartment bedroom and in a large open space such as a warehouse or outdoor terrace.
Yes. Coolzy can be positioned to direct its airstream toward two people sleeping side by side in a double bed. The Focus Enhancer accessory, included with Coolzy-Pro, extends the effective range of the airstream and provides greater flexibility in directing cool air across a wider area. Coolzy can easily be positioned so that one person gets more cool air than their partner if necessary. For two people with very different temperature preferences, two units can be used independently.
No installation is required. Coolzy is a plug-and-go appliance. Place it beside your bed or in your preferred location, plug it into a standard wall socket, and it is operational within seconds. There are no pipes to connect, no wall brackets to mount, no drainage to arrange, and no technician to book. This makes Coolzy suitable for rental apartments, heritage buildings, hotel rooms, caravans, boats, and any location where a fixed air conditioning system cannot be installed.
No. Because Coolzy requires no modification to walls, windows, ceilings, or any part of the building structure, it does not require planning permission, heritage approval, body corporate consent, or landlord authorisation of any kind. It is treated in the same category as any other household appliance: a television, a lamp, a fan. This makes it the only practical cooling solution for residents of listed buildings, protected heritage zones, and managed apartment buildings across Europe where fixed air conditioning installation is restricted or prohibited.
A split system air conditioner is the most effective way to cool an entire room, but it comes with significant costs and constraints. Installation typically costs between 1,000 and 2,000 euros or more, requires a technician, involves drilling through walls, and may require planning or body corporate approval. Running costs for sleeping use can reach 200 euros per month depending on electricity tariffs.
Windows and doors must remain closed when running a split air conditioner and there is no fresh air ventilation. Especially with newer buildings that are more air-tight, there is minimal air exchange, so odours and gases like carbon dioxide and methane accumulate in the recycled air. Split air conditioners are also associated with great infection risks from pathogens.
Coolzy costs a fraction of a split system to purchase, requires no installation, consumes approximately one fifth of the electricity, and can be moved freely. For users who want to cool themselves during sleep rather than cool an entire room, Coolzy provides comparable comfort at dramatically lower cost.
Finally, most split air conditioners require costly annual servicing to remove accumulated dust and skin particles from the filters. Coolzy is easy to maintain: just check the filters every two to four weeks and wash off any dust with plain water.
Yes. Coolzy is particularly well suited to rental apartments precisely because it requires no installation. Coolzy is ideal for enters who cannot install a fixed air conditioner, either because their lease prohibits it, or because the building does not permit it. There is no need to discuss it in advance with the building owner or estate agent. It is transported easily when moving between properties, so there is no question of what happens to the investment at the end of a tenancy.
Yes. Heritage buildings and listed properties across Europe frequently prohibit or restrict any modification to facades, windows, or structural elements, which rules out the installation of split system air conditioners entirely. Coolzy requires no modification to any part of the building and can therefore be used freely in any heritage or listed property. It is also quiet enough to use in buildings where noise is a concern for neighbours in adjacent apartments.
Coolzy is much quieter (43 – 48dB) than conventional portable air conditioners, which typically use large fans and high-power compressors that generate considerable noise (55 – 65 dB). Coolzy uses a small, high-efficiency rotary compressor and low-noise fan components selected specifically for bedroom use. The Coolzy-Pro model uses an enhanced rotary compressor that is quieter than the standard model. Most users find Coolzy produces a gentle background hum comparable to a quiet fan, which many people find conducive to sleep.
Yes. Coolzy seems to contradict all the normal rules for air conditioners! Because Coolzy cools people rather than spaces, it works effectively in sheltered outdoor locations such as covered terraces, pergolas, outdoor dining areas, and shaded patios. It requires only a standard power socket. In outdoor settings, the waste heat produced by the unit is immediately absorbed by the surrounding air and is not noticeable. This makes Coolzy useful for extending comfortable outdoor living during hot European summers.
Yes. Coolzy runs from standard AC power which is always provided in larger yachts from an inverter powered by batteries. Coolzy can run completely off-grid with modest batteries for storing solar power. Coolzy provides comfortable sleep on board in the hottest cruising weather.
Coolzy consumes 340 Watts of electricity. Running it for eight hours overnight consumes approximately 2.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. At typical European electricity tariffs of 0.25 to 0.35 euros per kilowatt-hour, this costs approximately 0.70 to 0.95 euros per night. Over a three-month summer, total running costs are typically in the range of 65 to 85 euros, far less than the monthly running cost of a split system used for the same purpose.
Coolzy requires minimal maintenance. The air intake filters should be cleaned approximately every two weeks during regular use. This involves removing the filter panel and rinsing or brushing the filters, which takes just a few minutes. The refrigerant is sealed and does not require recharging under normal use. There are no consumables to replace, no water reservoirs to fill or empty, and no chemical treatments required. Coolzy is designed to be a low-maintenance appliance that works reliably season after season.
Coolzy was designed for Pakistan where temperatures are much higher than in Europe. We tested how people respond to Coolzy in Australia’s hottest town, Marble Bar, at 44.5°C.
The rising use of air conditioners is a major environmental issue. While practically all sources of greenhouse emissions are falling, emissions caused by air conditioners are rising rapidly.
There are several reasons for this rise in the use of air conditioners.
- Climate warming has caused summers to last longer with higher temperatures.
- More people are living in buildings that retain summer heat, particularly at night. Furthermore, apartments do not provide the flexibility to relocate to lower and cooler parts of the building during summer.
- Modern buildings with large windows let in more heat from sunlight.
- Cities are hotter than the surrounding countryside because of the loss of shade and vegetation and the heat released by vehicles and conventional air conditioners.
- Clothing fashions have changed in response to the popularity of air conditioners. Winter clothes are lighter and provide less warmth, and summer clothes are heavier and warmer than they used to be. It is less comfortable to be outside in hot weather with modern summer fashion.
- People lose their natural acclimatisation to heat and cold when they live and work in air conditioned buildings, and travel in air conditioned cars, buses and trains. This means people feel less comfortable in summer without air conditioning. Medical research is starting to show that moderate discomfort from exposure to heat and cold actually improves cardiovascular health. It’s actually good for you.
