How our portable A/C works
A compressor pushes refrigerant gas into a condenser heat exchanger where a fan blows air through the fins to cool the refrigerant gas so it condenses to a liquid. The liquid, still at high pressure, passes through a thin capillary tube or an expansion valve, reducing the pressure. The low pressure liquid is squirted into a second heat exchanger called the evaporator. Here the liquid evaporates into a cold gas, cooling air flowing past the tubes. In a bid to beat behind-the-knee-sweat (we’ve all been there) you open up your Coolzy full blast, and your cat jumps on your lap looking grateful, which is a first. Pet Air Conditioning: Yes or No?
The general consensus from veterinarians is YES; create a cooler environment for your animals, because if you’re suffering from the heat, your 4-legged friends most certainly are.
Dogs and cats generally run 5 – 7 °F (3-4°C) hotter than humans and unlike us they can’t sweat. As they can’t drop their furs off at coat check they have to deal with the heat their own way…
Hot Dogs
Dogs keep cool by panting, which evaporates moisture from their lungs and takes the heat away from their bodies. However, in extreme heat and humidity, panting simply exchanges hot air for hotter air, which can leave them at risk of heat exhaustion.
When it comes to keeping dogs cool, short-nosed dogs like Bulldogs or Pugs cannot cool themselves easily enough through panting and dogs that come from colder climates and have shaggier, thicker coats, like Newfoundlands or Huskies need a little extra help adjusting to the heat, so aircon certainly helps.

Cats turn to grooming themselves more in hot temperatures, with the evaporating saliva causing a cooling effect, much like sweating for humans. Cats are also the masters of minimising movement when it gets too hot, as well as finding the coolest spot in the house to hide when the heat is on. What is the Difference Between Evaporative and Compressor Air Conditioners?
An evaporative air conditioner (normally called an air cooler), works by evaporating water into the room. This uses very little energy BUT it also is less effective AND it needs to be filled with water regularly. Air coolers do not work in high humidity.
A compressor-driven portable air conditioner uses refrigerant to cool the air. Compressor-driven portable air conditioners are more effective at cooling and work in all environments.

Small air conditioners provide limited cooling. Therefore it’s important to understand this limitation and how to use these devices.
A small camping air conditioner cannot cool a whole room. A small room needs at least 10,000 BTU/hr cooling capacity because of it’s thermal mass (the walls and furniture). If you want to cool a small room, with no insulation, you will need at least 12,000 BTU/hr cooling capacity which would be a big, heavy (very un-portable) air conditioner.
A large room, with little or no insulation, will need ~18,000 BTU/hr to cool the whole space (more in hot conditions). This is highly impractical for renters as you won’t be able to remove the A/C.
An alternative is to focus the cool air to only cool the person (instead of the entire room). This saves energy and cost.
